Endocavity ultrasound probes are commonly used as part of the clinical exam.
These include transvaginal, transrectal and transoesophageal exams which are all areas commonly infected with the human papillomavirus (HPV).
Thus, transducers used for these exams are highly susceptible to contamination by HPV.
It has been demonstrated that these probes can remain contaminated with high-risk HPV even when approved disinfection protocols have been performed.
