How does UV-C work?

Antigermix® has low-pressure UV-C tubes which emit high-intensity radiation in the invisible wavelength known as ‘Ultraviolet Type C’ which has a biocidal peak at 254nm.

 

The energy of the photons penetrates the cell walls of microorganisms (bacteria, viruses, and spores) to be absorbed by DNA, RNA and the proteins which are then destroyed by four concurrent mechanisms: 

  • Photohydration: the water molecules are pushed into the DNA and prevent its transcription

  • Photosplitting: strands of DNA are split apart

  • Photodimerization: the DNA bases fuse inappropriately

  • Photocrosslinking: the cell walls are damaged and this causes cell lysis (breaking down of the membrane and death of the cell)

Are your Patients Protected?

Endocavity ultrasound probes are commonly used as part of the clinical exam. These include transvaginal, transrectal and transoesophageal studies which are all areas commonly infected with the human papillomavirus (HPV).  Thus transducers used for these studies are highly susceptible to contamination by HPV, and it has been demonstrated that these probes can remain contaminated with high-risk HPV even when approved disinfection protocols have been performed. 

Antigermix S1 device showed excellent efficacy against HPV16 and HPV18 as compared to other High Level Disinfection Methods.
